The Solterrassen project in Solsidan includes renovation and extension of a two-storey apartment building, made of brick, plaster and stone by the famous Ahlsén brothers in 1954. The existing building on Skyttevägen is being converted into apartments and townhouses. All homes will be south-facing and have generous balconies and outdoor areas. At the top of the building, there will be six exclusive penthouses with loft bedrooms and roof terraces.
This commission involved preserving the existing structure and extending the volume of the building. Elevating the roof to a 45° pitch and adding dormer windows paved the way for a new storey full of character.
The conversion of the facade from brick to light plaster, with timber elements at the windows, will give the building an appealing new exterior and at the same time further develop the clear, elegant design idiom of the building. The difference in height between the front and rear of the building has allowed us to create townhouses with their own gardens. The glazed premises at street level give the building an open, welcoming impression on entry to Solsidan and will accommodate a diverse range of services for residents of the area. The ambition of this project has been to retain the unique character of the building while also creating modern living.
